Updated: Jan 13, 2023

Formula 1 and Le Mans' golden age race cars hit the Dubai Autodrome track this November and it was a sight like no other.

The second year running, for what seems to be set to become an annual event in Dubai, saw even more historic cars racing around the track. Among the crowds of people were a few familiar faces too. The likes of Alain Prost, Stephan Johansson and Mark Webber (to name a few) were all in attendance to see these retro beasts come back to life.

Across the three day event there were different classes of races taking place; GT & Prototypes from the 00s, Sports Cars from the 80s and Formula 1 from the 70s. Saturday saw Mike Cantillon win in the 70s F1 category with the Tyrrel 010-2, and Oliver Webb took victory on Sunday in James Hunt's Hesketh 308B. The Gebhardt C88 saw two victories across the weekend in the 80s Sports Car category with Marco Wenrer behind the wheel, and the Porsche RS Spyder won Saturday's GT & Prototype category thanks to the handywork of three-time Le Mans winner Andre Lotterer. The Sunday race was won by Emmanuel Collard behind the wheel of the Pescarolo LMP1 from 2001.

There was no shortage of excitement across the weekend as between the races saw Formula 1 cars from the 90s driven around in demonstration runs (they are just a tad too special to be put up against one another in a race). Michael Schumacher's 1992 Benetton B192 screamed around the circuit as the V8 was kicked into gear, alongside the iconic 1991 Ferrari 643. The stunning red car was able to be reunited with its former driver Alain Prost who was in attendance to watch the spectacle unfold.

After two successful years running, the Gulf Historic has been announced to be returning yet again in 2023, with even more cars and drivers expected to be on show!

"With this second [Historic Grand Prix] event, we’re establishing a concept we hope to expand in the coming years" - Pierre-Brice Mena, managing director of the event

We here at Auto Taste are super excited to see what the future for motorsport looks like in the region!
