In a shock move, the Brit is set to depart from Mercedes and replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari in 2025. One of the biggest moves in recent history sees a big gap in one of the top teams.

After lengthy negotiations at the end of the 2022 Season, Hamilton only renewed his contract with Mercedes for 2 years. Despite still having a year left on his contract with the German team, an exit clause has meant that he leaves the team in hopes of better chances to fight for race wins at Ferrari.
Lewis has been with Mercedes since 2013, and seen himself grow with the team as they dominated for several years winning several World Championships for both himself and the team. However, Mercedes haven't been able to get to grips with the recent regulation changes, and it seems Hamilton would rather spend his final years in a team that looks more hopeful to challenge for Championships, as he aims to clench that infamous 8th title.

As retirement nears for Lewis, it makes the most sense for him to make the move to a new team, to not only bring him a better chance at continuing his historical achievements, but to check-off the bucket list item that is racing for a team like Ferrari.
The move leaves a huge gap in one of the top teams on the grid, with many candidates hoping for a shot at the seat. The obvious first choice would be to look at who Lewis is replacing; Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard has proven his ability at Ferrari, and previously McLaren, and would certainly be up for the challenge at Mercedes, but with many drivers out of contract at the end of 2024, there are plenty of options for Sainz to look at.

Other possible candidates include Frederik Vesti, who is currently part of the teams junior programme and has tested with them in FP1 in 2023. He finished runner up in the 2023 Formula 2 Championship, but offers incredible talent behind the wheel and would be a strong choice for Mercedes.
Similarly, Mick Schumacher is another strong choice for the team, as he is currently their reserve driver & has experience racing in Formula 1 for two seasons with Haas. Following in the footsteps of his father, his relationship with Mercedes has been very healthy, with support from Toto Wolff immediately after being dropped by Haas at the end of 2022.
Whatever happens, it's safe to say that silly season just got a whole lot sillier.
